With 5 minutes, chicken wire and some wool, you can make these cute ‘fluff buffets’ so birds can gather good stuff (not plastic & litter) for their nests.
I’ve been hanging them in trees and also out the window – so I can watch ‘birdy TV’ from the couch.

How to make a ‘fluff buffet’ for birds
- Cut chicken wire into sections. I prefer the shitty, crafty stuff, rather than the proper fencing chicken wire. It’s easier to cut and bend, plus the holes are smaller to the birds yoinking out big wads of wool in one go. Size it according to how much wool you have – you wanna stuff it in tight.
- Place the wool on the wire and wrap it up like a sushi roll.
- Fold the pointy, pokey ends of the chicken wire inwards so you dont hurt the birds (or scratch your hands).
4. Fasten the bottom and sides of your roll. I used my cool little fencing crimper thing to fasten the chicken wire to itself – but you can use tie wire or cable ties if you don’t have one.
5. Once you’ve got an open ended pillow – stuff in any excess wool so it’s packed in tight.
6. Close the top end of the pillow, sealing all the edges.
6. Use string or wire to suspend it. I hung this one low enough so I could get a photo – but ideally you want it nice and high away from predators (or dumb dogs like Darren)
What if you don’t have wool?
Well that’s where I come in… In a weird and wonderful turn of events (or desperation) I started sending out fragile items packaged in wool from my sheep.
I fully expected to get a million bad reviews.. but instead it became something people love. I only usually use it in the big boxes or to package glass bottles of serum – but if you’re keen to make one of these, leave me a note in the order comments and I’ll stuff some extra in.
If it’s not an option – you can also stuff your fluff buffets with malting pet & horse hair, straw or hay. Just make sure it’s an earthy, natural material- not anything plasticky.
