Comfrey Salve for Horses and Humans

..Something that really juices me up is the zen feeling of self sufficiency I get from growing plants and actually using them.

This is comfrey.

Comfrey Salve For Horses And Humans

It’s a fantastic starter herb for anyone who’s feeling the fascination of medicinal plants, mainly because:

🍃 It’s piss easy to grow (seriously… I forgot about a cutting in an EMPTY bucket and it still grew into a full plant. I have no idea how 😱

🥣 Whipping up basic comfrey potions requires no fancy equipment or ingredients.

👩‍⚕️ It’s really popular – particularly it’s use as topical treatment for pain & inflammation.

Mainly though – it’s a gift that keeps on giving in your garden. It’s a BEAST for mining for minerals in poor soil and creates a compost on ‘roids.

It’s also ok as the occasional animal fodder (with clauses).

How to Make Comfrey Salve

If you’re interested in brewing up your own comfrey salve, here’s my recipe

1- Fill a jar with comfrey leaves, moosh them with a blunt object.

Packem in tight bebbeh 😎

Once mooshed, the leaves should take up between 50-75% of the jar.

2 – Top the jar with oil.

A good oil, if you don’t mind.

Don’t ruin all the goodness with a nasty canola or mixed ‘vegetable’ oil, ploise.

For reference, I use a locally sourced olive oil.

3 – Leave in a warmish, dark place for 6 weeks. Shake the jar when you remember.

Mine live in the pantry in summer and in a secret alcove behind the chimney in winter.

Infused comfrey oil

This is the colour you’re aiming for – my comfrey oil after 6-8 weeks.

4 – Don’t be tempted to do a sneaky hot infusion to speed things up.

Allantoin, the thing that does comfrey’s heavy lifting, degrades in temps over 50 degrees celcius and you’ll just be making green slime, and that’s just a waste of everyone’s time 🙄

🍃 – After 6 weeks, the oil should be a dark, murky olive green. See pic on my pudgy little paw for reference 😆

5 – Blend the comfrey oil with beeswax at a ratio of 1 part beeswax to 5 parts comfrey oil. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, so add that at 1% if you’re not planning on using it immediately.

🍃 Also…same deal with the beeswax, as the oil. Please don’t stoop to using nasty soy, synthetic or poorly managed, glyphosate guzzling beeswax.

You’re better than that.

Of course, if you can’t be bothered waiting or doing the things- this is the part where I say “Here’s some i prepared earlier” with a big cheesy grin.

You can get it from my online store. It’s called Grumble Balm, it’s is garden grown and has all the good stuff…you know the deal 😎

It’s worth saying that while I’m happy to share my recipes… I do have one request.

Could you do this mindful of the trees, animals and soil you support while doing so? 🙏

Soy, canola and various other monocultures are mofos… But if you grow your own, buy from your neighbour or support your local regen/organic farmers you’re supporting an ecosystem of care.

I dunno about you, but I reckon that stuff is really important 🤷‍♀️.. and if you’d like to buy from me & support my farm, soil, bees and animals – you’ll find the link here:

    Hi Jemima,
I started buying your skincare a few months ago and absolutle love it and am proud to be supporting a womans home business.
As for Comfey, in another land called the Northern Rivers, in another lifetime far away, there lived a young hippy who used to eat fire roasted Bunya nuts, wrapped in fresh comfrey leaved with tomato cooked with tamari! How I ate them 3 times a day I’ll never know as they are sort of furry in an unpleasant way, but I did until it was mango season and then I lived on them for months.
The Comfrey leaves musy have been okay, because at 68, I’m still here😂
